Synopsis:
Featuring both Bill and Ted's movies, plus a radically cool bonus disc
including a documentary, the premiere episode of the cartoon, an air
guitar lesson, interviews, and much, much more, this is a most
excellent set. Score!
BILL & TED'S EXCELLENT ADVENTURE: Keanu Reeves (The Matrix) and Alex
Winter (The Lost Boys) star as a couple of righteous dudes from San
Dimas who travel into the past to learn some history so they can save
their fledgling rock band!
BILL & TED'S BOGUS JOURNEY: When everyone's favorite surf-speaking
dudes are killed by their totally heinous robot doubles, they must go
where no man has gone before to Hell and back again in this "most
triumphant sequel" (Boxoffice).
Ahh, the mighty Bill and the mighy Ted. Long before Keanu Reeves became a "serious" actor ("Dracula"? -- yikes!), he was turning in such entertaining fair as the very
entertaining adventures of Bill & Ted. I still remember when the first film came out and dropped like a bombshell on us teenagers - it was hilarious, entertaining and all-around
fantabulous. The sequel, while hotly anticipated, may not have lived up to expectations (what sequel can?), but it was still entertaining fare that took us down another fun
(and a bit darker) romp with the boys...
"Excellent Adventure" is by the far the strongest of the two films, as we're introduced to the hilarious 80s-speak of the title characters (Keanu Reeves never acted so
naturally before, or since) and their penchant for rock & roll. Unfortunately, school was bringing them down, so they end up taking a tour through time in order to meet
some of history's most celebrated characters in order to pass their oh-so-rough history class. Fun stuff. Light, fluff, entertaining, classic.
"Bogus Journey" introduces the Grim Reaper to the affair and takes the boys on another wild journey, this time versus their evil dopplegangers. While not as original as
the first (hey, we already knew how goofy the characters were), we do get a far better soundtrack (KISS' "God Gave Rock & Roll To You" being a fantastic stand-out) and -
dare i say it - a more mature film; still goofy and fun, but with some darker undertones to provide a nice counter to the frivolity.
Overall, 2 very classic films which MGM has packaged up in a definitive collection with a bonus disc of goodies. Great stuff, nice addition to any collection.
Video: How's it look?
Both films are presented in anamorphic widescreen transfers, with "Excellent Adventures" having a 2.35:1 aspect ratio and "Bogus Journey" being delivered in a 1.85:1 aspect
ratio. Both films display the same overall quality - great colours, decent detail (a bit of softness, which isn't a surprise given the age/era of the films) and the odd bit
of dirt & noise. Overall, however, these are really nice transfers that should please fans of the films.
Audio: How's it sound?
Both films get the Dolby 5.1 surround treatment, with clear dialogue and nice surround effects in both. Of course, music is booming and lively for the Wyld Stallyns across
both pictures.
