Synopsis:
Through an improbable series of events and an impossibly bungled supermarket hold-up, down on their luck con men Matt and Wilbur find themselves working with the Miami police force. As they patrol the streets of the city, their main job becomes trying to break the hold of the city's street gangs, including one group of teens in old movie-gangster style clothes, led by a kid named Geronimo who dresses in full Indian warrior regalia.
Sometimes I can excuse a movie for not having a story because it has other things going for it: humour, action, horror, a good look to it. However when it has none of the above, you're stuck with a genuine dud. That pretty much sums up my feelings for Crime Busters, a lame buddy cop movie that has nothing impressive whatsoever. Well, okay, I might have let out a little chuckle once. But that lasted about two seconds.
Maybe I look a little too fondly at the likes Police Academy and Lethal Weapon. I find each to be entertaining in their own right even if they aren't considered critical classics. They had funny characters and simple situations made better through humour. Crime Busters follows a similar pattern of these films only every from start to finish falls flat.
Video: How's it look?
Shown in anamorphic widescreen, the picture quality is solid but not spectacular. There's a fair amount of wear and tear evident throughout and the picture lacks exceptional clarity.
Audio: How's it sound?
It's got Dolby Digital 2.0 -- solid but not great. The film is also available in Spanish and French tracks.
Extras: What additional goodies are included?
- Biographies of stars Terence Hill and Bud Spencer, and director Enzo Barboni.
- A translated interview with Bud Spencer that runs a shade under six minutes.
- Trailers for Super Fuzz, Odds & Evens, Keep Your Hands Off the Island and Double Trouble.
- Funny in any language is a collection of four teasers for other Hill/Spencer DVDs.
Closing Thoughts
Overly long and not very funny, Crime Busters is a lame film. Add to that a mediocre list of special features and you've got a disappointing DVD. And although it's not a huge detail, the packaging promises a photo gallery, yet there is none to be found.
