Synopsis:
Seattle, Washington, home of the best tasting unemployment in the
Northwest, and home of Josh Lowell -- town pillar and
transvestite-in-denial. Josh is like every other Tori Amos fan, with
one minor exception, he thinks he IS Tori Amos. This minor flaw in his
otherwise ethereal existence is the subject of an intrepid team of
student filmmakers who follow Josh and his "posse" around town and
watch the detritus hit the fan.
This is a strange film that sneaks up on you as you watch. Seemingly about a guy who believes he is Tori Amos and his two compatriots, we watch as they interact with one another and other local yokels in the Seattle area. Part documentary, part mockumentary, all bizarre, this film is definitely unique, but I'm not sure that's enough to make it of interest for most viewers.
It does suffer from the usual indie downsides - weak acting, zero production values, etc. - but somehow the low-budget quality only adds to the overall experience of the film and its truly head-shaking story. It's played very straight-laced, but the comedy is found in the sincerity of the characters (both main and supporting) and the hazy reality they seem to inhabit.
Interesting, original, but not for everyone.
Video: How's it look?
Fullscreen transfer looks decent, but this shot-on-video production does suffer from varying image quality. However, the DVD presents it as best as can be expected, so no real complaints.
Audio: How's it sound?
Stereo mix delivers passable audio, but there is a lot of background noise that competes with the dialogue for your sonic attention.
Extras: What all's on the DVD?
- interview w/ director
- deleted scenes
- bloopers
- video footage from Seattle premiere
- isolated score music track
- 2 bonus short films
Closing Thoughts
Amusing, well-intentioned indie film + quite a big selection of extras = well-packed DVD for fans of indie cinema
