Synopsis:
George Burns used to make a joke that he could not die until he reached 100 because he was booked in Vegas until then. He was booked, he made that age, then left us as one of the most enduring entertainers of all time. This DVD is simply entitled George Burns In Concert and features a nearly hour-long stand-up session that includes his famous monotone singing.
Burns had actually cut a Country Music album at the time and was promoting it in spots. Though his Vaudeville type of humor may be considered dated by some, others appreciated the wit, one-liners and surprise while looking on at the marvel of this survivor. The audience is with him from the moment he arrives on stage and the master that he is, he knows how to work this and not let go until the program is over.
Growing up, the name George Burns conjured up an image of a cigar-chomping old guy in a tuxedo. That pretty much sums up George Burns Live in Concert, a 1982 concert filmed before an appreciative crowd in Hamilton.
Comedy and stand-up has changed a lot since Burns first broke onto the scene. While I appreciate his quieter, more family-friendly approach when compared to some of the more contemporary comedians such as Eddie Murphy, Chris Rock and Dave Chappelle, I can't say that I found this routine overly entertaining. Burns has his moments, but when you're 82-years-old (his age when it was recorded), you only have so much energy.
I know Burns has his fans, even today. That's who this DVD was made for and I'm sure they'lll love every second. Me -- I'd refer to watch Eddie Murphy: Delirious one more time.
Video: How's it look?
Sadly, there's nothing to rave about here. The full screen picture is understandable given that it appears the concert was originally made for television broadcast or early home video way back when. However the picture is really showing its age. It's grainy and somewhat blurred throughout. The frames of the picture also show significant signs of wear to the point where it became something of a distraction for me.
Audio: How's it sound?
Presented in Dolby Stereo, audio is adequate but not spectacular.
Extras: What additional goodies are included?
Closing Thoughts
There's not an abundance of George Burns standup comedy available on DVD. For that reason, fans of the late comedian may want to track this one down. Otherwise, the disc is on the disappointing side due to its barebones presentation, both technically and in the lack of extra content.
