Synopsis:
Johnny Knoxville and his insane crew take the concept of the MTV show "Jackass" - a bunch of guys doing dangerous and disturbing stunts just to see what happens - to the extreme--and this time it's not edited for television.
What can you say about a guy jumping on a trampoline and throwing his body at his ceiling fan? Or how about the same guy shimmying across an alligator pit with raw chicken hanging from his ginch? Or maybe snorting wasabi, puking it up and then re-eating it? And I haven't even gotten to the toy car up the butt hole.
Jackass: the Movie brings Hollywood to a new low. And that's what makes it so funny, at least when I wasn't looking away in discomfort. There's absolutely no story here, just guys running around America and Japan doing really stupid stunts. It's one of those movies that you'll either get a major kick out of or one that will make you shake your head in complete and utter disgust. I'd like to say otherwise, but I'm of the first camp.
Video: How's it look?
It is what it is. Shot on low-budget digital, Jackass doesn't look like your typical blockbuster. Although the look is often drab, there are no signs of scratches or defects. The film is presented in its original widescreen format enhanced for 16:9 TVs.
Audio: How's it sound?
Audio is presented in a solid 5.1 Dolby Surround track. There's also a 2.0 Surround track.
Extras: What additional goodies are included?
-
- Johnny Knoxville, cinematographer Dimitry Elyashkevich and director Jeff Tremaine provide one commentary that is much more exciting than most commentary tracks and often funny.
- The film's cast provide a second commentary. This one feels more you feel like you're one of the boys kicking back and watching the movie with them.
- Originally made for MTV, "Making of Jackass: the Movie is your typical making-of featurette filled with interviews and behind-the-scenes footage.
- There's almost seven minutes worth of outtakes, which is sort of ironic given the fact that the movie thrives off of screw-ups and mishaps.
- Like every film, there's lots left out. With the DVD 27 minutes of deleted scenes are available, making up 19 stunts.
- There's also a collection of nine sets deemed "Too Hot for MTV" that were, presumably, originally meant for television.
- Jackass: Number Two teaser trailer.
- English subtitles.
Closing Thoughts
For fans of Jackass and those who like to watch people torture themselves in a somewhat controlled environment, this is a great and loaded DVD. Everyone should probably stay away. You'll be missing out on some great low-brow laughs, but that's you're prerogative.
