Synopsis:

When ambitious New York analyst Lincoln Mathers relocates his family to England, his wife unearths London's disturbing past and becomes hostage to an ancient spirit. When Mathers finally realizes that his wife is not who she was, he is forced to accept that his family's only salvation lies in a leap of faith...

With one of the coolest DVD covers I've seen in a long time and a intriguing plot summary, I was quite intrigued to check out this indie gem from Heretic Films. In brief, man moves family to London, wife finds buried voodoo goodies in the basement, and all hell ensues. Throw in a hottie babysitter to spice things up and you have the makings of a truly original film.

While not quite a horror (at least not in the traditional sense), "London Voodoo" weaves an intriguing tale that blends in an attempt at factual voodoo-ology with a suspenseful storyline that bobs and weaves and keeps you wondering and guessing throughout. While I'll admit my attention did wander during some of the slow parts, I was thoroughly impressed by the director's vision and the film he was able to bring to life.

Video: How's it look?
The anamorphic (1.85:1) widescreen transfer is pretty good, especially for an independent film. The colours are quite nice (the odd bit of oversaturation, perhaps, but that may be intentional on the part of the filmmakers), strong detail, with only the slightest bit of film noise rearing its fleeting head a few times throughout the movie.

Audio: How's it sound?
Dolby 5.1 mix is top-notch - crystal-clear dialogue, fantastic surround usage for the background music/ambiance and thumping usage of the sub. Very nice job.

Extras: What all's on the DVD?

  • director's commentary
  • "making of" featurette
  • "Interview with Voodoo Priest" featurette
  • deleted scenes
  • trailer

Closing Thoughts
Original and ambitious indie thriller + a cornucopia of extras = impressive DVD for fans of indie horror (or voodoo)
