Synopsis:

A rookie FBI agent, hoping to break a bank robbery ring, infiltrates a colony of surfers in Southern California.

Whoa! It's the perfect Keanu Reeves line. No matter how hard he wants us to take him as some sort of serious thespian, we're still going to remember him most in his clueless California beach boy roles. His first break came in Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure, Speed vaulted him in superstardom and The Matrix trilogy made him an action figure. My personal favourite is Point Break, a deliciously trashy film that mixes heists with the peculiar world of extreme sports – namely surfing.

Reeves plays an undercover cop sent to bust a gang of seasonal bank robbers. The theory is that they're a group of surfers who stroll into town in the summer and take off in the winter. And guess what, the rookie cop finds his way and the lines between good and bad start to blur.

Point Break has all the makings of a great guiltless action film – a story that's more preposterous than plausible, girls in skimpy clothes, "cool dude" stars and an endless supply of action and stunts. I know I'm a sucker for surfing movies, but there's something about the brotherly bond Reeves and Patrick Swayze's characters form that I found myself drawn into and enthralled by.

Video: How's it look?
Point Break looks great with its anamorphic widescreen presentation (2.35:1 aspect ratio). The picture is spectacular with no signs of degradation.

Audio: How's it sound?
Sound is an important part of Point Break and this DVD doesn't disappoint. The Dolby Digital 5.1 really pops in all the right places. There's also separate tracks for English 4.0 Surround, French Dolby Surround and Spanish mono.

Extras: What additional goodies are included?

  • Photo gallery of more than 30 behind-the-scenes still photographs.
  • English and Spanish subtitles.
  • Eight deleted scenes shown in the roughest of cuts.
  • "It's Make or Break" is a 20-plus-minute look at the film's memorable characters.
  • As one might expect, "Ride the Wave" explores the world of surfing.
  • "Adrenaline Junkies" focuses on the stunts of Point Break and the stunt doubles.
  • "On Location: Malibu" traces the aura and mystique of the film's primary location.
  • Three theatrical trailers.

Closing Thoughts
TMake no apologies about it, Point Break is enjoyable for those who love a good ole' action flick. A cast and/or crew commentary track is definitely missing from the "Pure Adrenaline Edition" DVD, but this is still a strong release for a moderately successful film made several years ago..
