Synopsis:

A 'dramady' about rich white New Yorkers and their relationships, how they have so much time on their hands that they can't help but get into trouble and jeapardize the only thing that really matters to them. Love.

Often films like American Pie and Dumb and Dumber are reviled by some as being silly, low-brow and full of the toilet flavour of humour. And maybe they are. Believe it or not there can be high-brow versions of the same style of movie. Trust the Man is one such match. Despite having such art house superstars as Julianne Moore, Billy Crudup and Maggie Gyllenhaal, it's a film for adults made in the vein of a high school comedy. Not that that's a bad thing.

By not holding back, Trust the Man provides an honest look at adult dysfunction and imperfections. It doesn't dance around. Sometimes the bluntness is awkward, other times it's enough to provide a hearty laugh.

There is a definite possibility that some will be turned off by the frank conversations based around sex and relationships. I have to say I was a little shocked at times. But that's where the appeal lies.

The end comes together a little too easy, especially considering the tone established throughout the rest of the film. Still, there's enough substance and adult toilet humour to ensure a solid impression.

Video: How's it look?
It's the best of both worlds on this dual-sided disc. One side's got an anamorphic widescreen transfer that's crisp and colourful. For fans of full screen, the other side has that too.

Audio: How's it sound?
Trust the Man comes with a solid Dolby Digital 5.1 mix. There's not a lot of "wow" factor in the way of audio in this talk-heavy film. While sound is very important to the final product, this isn't exactly Star Wars or King Kong

Extras: What additional goodies are included?

  • Director Bart Freundlich and star David Duchovny serve up a lively commentary track.
  • Four deleted scenes available with or without commentary from director Freundlich and Duchovny. Played together they run 10 minutes. (On widescreen side only.)
  • "Reel Love: The Making of Trust the Man" describes itself. The behind the scenes featurette is heavy on cast and crew interviews and runs 13 minutes. (On full screen side only.)
  • English, Spanish and French subtitles.

Closing Thoughts
Trust the Man is an intelligent low-brow comedy for adults. It's got lots of ideas on relationships and even more frank discussions about sex and everything else. While I like the simplicity of having full screen and widescreen on the same disc, having to search both sides for all the features was a little annoying. A simple note in the special features menu would have been nice. Still, this is a solid disc for those adults who aren't easily offended by a three-letter word that starts with S and ends in X.
