Preview of CIFF 2016

Movie Preview by Everyday Activist X CalgaryMovies.com

Calgary International Film Festival 2016 opened up on Wednesday, September 21, 2016. This year’s festival is more than just great movies. If you’re on a tight budget the festival offers a lot of free events too. Check out the numerous events in the BEHIND THE SCREEN SERIES category. You can watch people transform before your eyes at the MAKE UP TRANSFORMATIONS demonstration at Eau Claire Market this Sunday Sep 25 at noon, or talk to different film makers about their projects or get a tour of the new sound stage. Most of the locations are central so they are transit accessible. While tickets are free please be sure to sign up. It helps the organizers plan events appropriately.

The documentary on my list to see list for sure is DANCER, which is about the life of ballet dancer Sergei Polunin, the youngest male principle dancer in the London ballet. You may have seen in him in this David LaChapelle video: https://vimeo.com/118946875. Show times are Friday September 23, 2016 at 7:30 pm at and September 25, 2016 at 4:15 pm at Eau Claire.

Of course my selection for the Short Film category is going to be the DOCUMENTARY SHORTS. They feature documentaries from mostly Canada and the US. Show times are Monday Sep 26, 7:15 pm Saturday Oct 1, 1:45 pm at Cineplex Eau Claire 3.

In the Headliners category DENIAL looks pretty good. I’m pretty sure this one will be available after the festival. It stars Rachel Weisz and Timothy Spall and is based on a true story of a Holocaust expert being sued by a Holocaust denier for libel. The trailer is pretty dramatic. Show times are Monday Sep 26, 7:00 pm and Sunday Oct 2, 1:45 pm at Cineplex Eau Claire 5.

Since I’ve been busy with writing festivals, CONSIDERING LOVE AND OTHER MAGIC sounds like a good film where the lines between fact and fiction blur, made by Calgary Film maker David Schultz. He along with two cast members will be at both screenings Tuesday Sep 27, 7:30 pm at the Globe Upstairs theatre and on Sunday Oct 2, 11:45 am at Cineplex Eau Claire 2 theatre.

Because I am a holistic health practitioner, in the New American Cinema category, THE MASTER CLEANSE caught my eye. Literally facing your demons seems like a daunting task, especially when they are slimy frog like creatures. I suppose in time one would learn to love them as part of oneself. Show times are Thursday Sep 29, 10:00 pm at Cineplex Eau Claire 5 and Friday Sep 30, 4:30 pm at Globe Upstairs.

Part of my job involves a little bit of magic, though nothing like THE MIRACLE OF TEKIR in the World Cinema Category. When I first got into healing my parents were terrified about what people would say and do, much like the people of Mara’s village. For her safety she leaves and helps others heal with her skills and sacred mud. Show Times are Saturday Sep 24, 5:00 pm at Cineplex Eau Claire 4 Thursday Sep 29, 9:45 pm at Cineplex Eau Claire 2.
