Banff Mountain Film Festival World Tour: Program 1

Movie Review by Everyday Activist X CalgaryMovies.com

So what makes the tour different than the festival? I would have to say the opportunity to meet some of athletes present promoting their films makes it special and contrary to popular belief the films chosen for the tour aren’t necessarily award winners and if they are they tend to be shortened, unless they were submitted as short films. In Calgary we are lucky to have two programs available, which isn’t the case in most cities nor is the amount of screenings in two different venues. Since all of these tend to sell out, I did quick searches on the Internet to see if I could find some of the shorts for you to enjoy at home. If you can still get tickets, my choice is to watch program 2.

Pretty Faces (special edit) (2014, USA, 11 min) - I didn’t watch this one.

Salween Spring (2015, USA, 9 min) - “Salween Spring is Travis Winn’s meditation on change, personal struggle, and kayaking along China’s frontier.” I watched this in Banff and thought it was great. Someone from across the world can care so much about a place, despite the heart break changes bring. Like a good activist though, he knows the way to protect the river is to get people to experience it so they care.

Curiosity (2014, USA, 13 min) - I’m not sure why the title is Curiosity. It was about North Face athletes running ultra-marathons. The movie was good. I enjoyed watching the scenery and the racers.

Unbranded (special edit) People’s Choice Award (2015, USA, 44 min) - You can find my review here: Everyday Activist Review >

Nature Rx (2015, USA, 2 min) - You may have seen this before. It’s a spoof on all the drug commercials. I laugh every time :) Part 1 is definitely better than part 2.

Climbing Ice: The Iceland Trifecta (2015, USA, 17 min) - Beautiful film. I love ice caves, though I don’t know why they would choose to climb that way. The iceberg was a bit scary.

unReal (special edit) (2015, USA, 12min) - Wasn’t able to see this one.

Sounds of Paragliding (2014, France, 4 min) - Paragliding is a touch unnerving for me. Watching this didn’t make it better, especially when he started to do tricks. We watched paragliders in Peru and it seemed safe enough. I’m not brave enough to try.

The Warmth of Winter (2015, USA, 6 min) - Skiing movie, though because it was short I enjoyed it.

Denali (2015, USA, 8 min) - Bring tissues. The story is about a man and his dog narrated from the dog’s point of view. I’m not a huge fan of pets myself, though the film was well done.
