The Greatest Movie Trailers: Watchmen

The assembly of the movie trailer is an often overlooked art in the film industry. It's usually the marketing and distribution wing of a movie studio that assembles the previews, trailers and TV spots, but occasionally and especially in the old days, the director or filmmaking team would do it. The whole idea of the movie trailer can be a double edged sword. On the one hand, it, more than anything else at times, is what will pack 'em in come showtime, it will excite the movie lover and give them something to salivate and look forward to. Then again, it can also spell doom for the film if the trailer makes the movie look crappy, or can be one of those too often experienced situations where they put all the funny scenes of a comedy in the trailer, leaving the public on opening night with little else to have fun with.

Trailer's From Heaven is going to present some of the (in my opinion) greatest trailer's of all time with a little blurb about what makes them so special. These are not in order of greatest to least, or in a countdown format, just random.

The first is the first theatrical trailer for Watchmen:

This trailer is amazing for a number of reasons, but the greatest asset to it is the choice of music, which ironically doesn't even appear in the movie itself. The music is a Smashing Pumpkins song called The Beginning is the End is the Beginning, which was originally released as part of the Batman & Robin soundtrack. The song compliments the visuals in the trailer perfectly and the lyrics even fit.

The other thing that's amazing about this trailer is the clips that were chosen. Even if you're unfamiliar with the Watchmen graphic novel, you can see that this is a superhero movie with a twist. More violent, more sexy, more desperate. I've watched this trailer countless times and get shivers every single time. Even if the movie didn't quite live up to the promise of this first trailer (it was still a great movie), this is definitely one of the greatest movie trailers ever.
