This May long weekend, intrepid teams of animators take over the Quickdraw studios to hang out, get sloppy, eat food, watch cartoons, and make their own brand-new animations! Form a team or come by yourself, work with pals or find a new friend! You’ve got 48 hours to make a cool new film. QAS provides work space, animation equipment, software, computers, on-site technical assistance, emotional support – and enough FOOD and CAFFEINE and SUGAR to keep you thriving over the weekend! Finished films are screened the following Friday at a sweet party that includes RAD PRIZES for the winners!

Everyone is welcome, and no experience is necessary. Equipment is claimed by participants on a first-come, first-serve basis, so if you want that Cintiq you better register quick!

SIGN-UP FEE

$50 for current producing members (includes food, caffeine, studio space, equipment, and technical assistance for the long weekend event) OR

$100 for non members (includes year-long production membership + all of the above). Fee is per person.

THEME

There’s been a lot of change in the world over the last few months. We’ve finished up construction on our brand-new studios, and we are excited to throw open the doors and let Lockdown participants be the first QAS members to work in our new classroom and studio spaces! However, a dystopian feeling hangs in the air. Politics curdle our timelines, divisions become deeper, authoritarians consolidate power as alliances crumble. New inhabitable planetary systems are discovered, and the dream of colonizing Mars becomes more and more possible. It’s hard not to flee into virtual realms or other planets to escape it all…

“What Orwell feared were those who would ban books. What Huxley feared was that there would be no reason to ban a book, for there would be no one who wanted to read one. Orwell feared those who would deprive us of information. Huxley feared those who would give us so much that we would be reduced to passivity and egotism. Orwell feared that the truth would be concealed from us. Huxley feared the truth would be drowned in a sea of irrelevance. Orwell feared we would become a captive culture. Huxley feared we would become a trivial culture, preoccupied with some equivalent of the feelies, the orgy porgy, and the centrifugal bumblepuppy. As Huxley remarked in Brave New World Revisited, the civil libertarians and rationalists who are ever on the alert to oppose tyranny “failed to take into account man’s almost infinite appetite for distractions.” In 1984, Orwell added, people are controlled by inflicting pain. In Brave New World, they are controlled by inflicting pleasure. In short, Orwell feared that our fear will ruin us. Huxley feared that our desire will ruin us.”
– Neil Postman, “Amusing Ourselves To Death”

In light of all this, this year’s theme is BRAVE NEW WORLDS. We encourage you to explore new locations, new planets, Orwellian or Huxleyan dystopias, or alternate futures full of hope. Get political, or not. Be serious, be silly, be cheeky – it’s up to you!
