Come to the new Central Library for a free screening of fascinating short films for
family audiences. What do puppets, animated objects, and amazing animation all
have in common? The National Film Board (NFB), that’s what. Curated by
festival founder Xstine Cook, this captivating selection of new and classic films
use puppetry, stop-motion, and other methods to entertain all ages while
celebrating the art of animating objects on screen.

Bead Game | Ishu Patel, 1977, 5 min, beads
Thousands of beads dance and move, assuming shapes of creatures both mythical and real. They continually devour, merge, and absorb one another in explosions of color.

Hedgehog’s Home | Iva Cvijanovic, 2017, 10 min, 3D stop-motion puppets
Based on the classic story by Branko Ćopić, this warm and universal tale reminds us there truly is no place like home.

Meltdown | Carrie Mombourquette, 2012, 1 min, clay & digital
A polar bear tries his luck finding a job in the big city as the last Arctic ice disappears. It’s hard fitting into the human world, but this bear finds a creative solution to his predicament.

Qalupalik | Ame Papatsie, 2010, 5 min, fabric, mixed media
Part-human sea monster, Qalupalik, lives deep in the Arctic Ocean and preys on children who do not listen to their parents or elders. Angutii refuses to help out in his family’s camp, and while playing by the shoreline, Qalupalik seizes him and drags him away. Angutii’s father, a great hunter, embarks on a lengthy kayak journey to try and bring his son home.

The Cat Came Back | Cordell Barker, 1988, 7 min, cel animation
This Oscar®-nominated classic is based on the century-old folk song of the same name. Old Mr. Johnson makes increasingly manic attempts to rid himself of a little yellow cat that just won’t stay away…

Woolly Mammoth | Bill Maylone, 1979, 1 min, stop-motion puppets
From the NFB’s Canada Vignettes series, meet a large animal that lived on the Canadian tundra over 10,000 years ago: the woolly mammoth.

The Fox and the Chickadee | Evan DeRushie, 2012, 7 min, stop motion puppets
A starving fox stumbles upon a lone chickadee caught in a farmer’s trap. Despite his hapless predicament, the chickadee turns the tables and proposes a plan that would provide the fox with food for the whole winter, rather than just a snack. He promises the fox a feast, but there’s a catch: he’ll need the chickadee’s help to get it.

Perhaps a little of both? Oh to have the power to toy with life and death, to create monsters who can punish those who torment him daily, or better yet, to create that one perfect day with Lily, the love of his 12-year-old life!

Film curator Xstine Cook is a multi-disciplinary artist based in Calgary, with a
lifelong practice as a mask artist. She is the artistic director of Calgary Animated
Objects Society, and the founder of the Festival of Animated Objects.
