The 20th Anniversary Calgary International Film Festival takes place September 18-29, 2019 in the heart of Calgary, showcasing 200 short and feature length multi-genre films, from Canada and around the world. With Academy Award® accreditation and juried cash prizes of up to $20,000, our twelve day Festival is world class in its celebration of cinema’s best and brightest. As part of our continued mission, we host participating filmmakers and connect them with the general public and audiences through events such as interactive post-screening Q&A’s, networking events, and moderated panels.

Each year’s line-up is grouped into 11 unique series – Headliners, Canadian, New American, World Cinema, Documentaries, Music on Screen, Late Shows and Shorts.

LES MISÉRABLES: Ladj Ly's scalding drama is a modern take on the classic tale of police corruption and its victims.
MILES DAVIS: BIRTH OF THE COOL: A riveting documentary about Miles Davis’ remarkable life and career.
SORRY WE MISSED YOU: A hard-up delivery driver and his wife struggle to get by in modern-day England in Ken Loach's follow-up to his Cannes winner I, DANIEL BLAKE.
JUDY: Follow legendary performer Judy Garland (Renée Zellweger) in this musical biopic as she arrives in London in 1968 to perform a series of sold-out concerts.

MUSIC ON SCREEN SERIES: The best of movies where music plays the starring role

LINDA RONSTADT: THE SOUND OF MY VOICE: Celebrate the artist whose voice defined a generation, while breaking the established rules of the game and opening doors for women in the music industry along the way.
AFTER SO MANY DAYS: Singer-songwriters Jim and Sam attempt to play one show every day for a year, putting their music and marriage to the ultimate test.
FIDDLER: A MIRACLE OF MIRACLES: The exhilarating origin story behind the beloved Broadway musical, Fiddler on The Roof, and its creative roots in 1960s New York.
MYSTIFY: MICHAEL HUTCHENCE: This intimate portrait of internationally renowned INXS frontman transports us through the looking glass to reveal a multifaceted, intensely sensitive and complex man.
OTHER MUSIC: For 20 years, indie record store "Other Music" was THE influential hub of music culture in New York City. This is their story.

LATE SHOWS SERIES: Dark, Daring, Sci-Fi, Horror & More

Dark, twisted and daring late night selection of genre films, ranging from sci-fi to horror, thriller and fantasy films from around the world, with no shortage of high-intensity suspense, shock, gore and action. From an infectious zombie outbreak on a reserve to a Stepford Wives-on-acid satire, this year's Late Shows Series is on fire!

HAPPY HOUR, RUSH HOUR & LUNCHTIME SHORTS: Thought $10 movies were a thing of the past? Think again.

HAPPY HOUR PRICING: We're back for a second year of HAPPY HOUR pricing. If you're stuck for something to do during the day, catch one of our films for only $10! Films Monday to Friday starting before 6:30pm are just $10 meaning you can catch an array of feature films, documentaries and shorts on the cheap.
RUSH HOUR SHORTS: Why sit in traffic when you could be eating popcorn and enjoying a film?! Our RUSH HOUR SHORTS package on Monday, September 23 allows you to beat the Monday madness and instead sit back, relax and enjoy an hour of handpicked shorts for you to enjoy!

Worry not, our two LUNCHTIME SHORTS packages are here to give you a quick fix of big screen entertainment before you head back to your desk. Did we mention it's only $10? 20TH ANNIVERSARY CIFF GALA SELECTIONS: Opening Gala and Closing Gala & Block Party

Opening Gala: THE SONG OF NAMES | Wed. September 18, 7:30PM, Jack Singer Concert Hall

François Girard (THE RED VIOLIN) has crafted another musical epic spanning decades, continents and featuring great performances by Tim Roth and Clive Owen. In the build-up to Britain's entry into World War II, a young Jewish violin prodigy from Warsaw is brought to London by his father.

Closing Gala: GUEST OF HONOUR | Sat. September 28, 7:30PM, Globe Cinema

An unassuming food inspector (David Thewliss) has his world turned upside down when his educator daughter is accused of abusing her position of authority with a student. Told through multiple timelines, GUEST OF HONOUR follows the father and daughter as they work through their complicated relationship and deal with unresolved personal traumas.

After the film will be a throwback to 2006 with our 20th Anniversary Block Party! 8th Avenue will be closed and participating bars and restaurants will feature custom cocktails, music, special pop-ups, and industry guests in attendance. Stay tuned for the second Closing Gala film announcement!

Calgary Film is a 12-day showcase of up to 200 multi-genre feature and short films from Canada and over 40 other countries. The festival hosts gala events, screenings, special presentations, and a Behind the Screen series that emphasizes unique and exciting ways for filmmakers and fans to interact.

Calgary Film is now the largest film festival in Alberta, and is the sixth largest in Canada. It is also an Oscar-qualifying festival for short films and was recently named one of "50 Film Festivals Worth the Entry Fee, 2016" by MovieMaker Magazine.
