The Tale of the Princess Kaguya
7/20/2019 @ 7:00pm

Our midsummer Saturday MASS features Isao Takahata's The Tale of the Princess Kaguya (2013). His final directorial project before his death in 2018, this Studio Ghibli-produced film was nominated for Best Animated Feature at the 2014 Academy Awards.

Based on the Japanese folk story "The Tale of the Bamboo Cutter," this story follows a bamboo cutter and his wife, who come upon a miniature girl inside a glowing bamboo shoot. The couple raise her as their own, thinking her a divine presence. This film follows this tiny girl, "Princess," as she grows from a tiny being to a beautiful young woman, to her ultimate fate as she comes to terms with her secret.

This film will be screened in Japanese with English subtitles.

Our monthly MASS sponsor is Redheads Japa Cafe. Follow them on social media for a chance to win two tickets to this screening. The contest will be announced in early July!

If the cost of purchasing a ticket is a barrier for you, we have partnered with the Calgary Public Library's Sun Life Arts + Culture Pass to provide free tickets to low-income folks. Visit for more information.

From The Guardian:
"It’s a world of charcoal lines and watercoloured hues; you can almost feel the brushstrokes upon fibrous paper as the proudly hand-drawn action unfolds, skittish motion drawing our attention to the old-fashioned artistry of key collaborators Osamu Tanabe and Kazuo Oga... [throughout this film's] languid pace and expansive running time."

From IMDB:
"Boasting narrative depth, frank honesty, and exquisite visual beauty, The Tale of the Princess Kaguya is a modern animated treasure with timeless appeal."
