MINDSTRIPS: A Heritage of Found Footage Filmmaking
Since the 1930s, beginning with Joseph Cornell, artists have often stolen images from mainstream and industrial cinema in making personal films. Out of this common river of dreams, new experiences assume an ecstatic, menacing charge, with debts to the collage, the cut-up, and the etching. In this illustrated talk, Stephen Broomer will discuss found footage cinema, the psychic and plastic branches of this tradition, and will address the motives of his recent feature-length works in this form as well as the specific techniques that he uses to explore and to personalize the history of cinema.
Stephen Broomer is a filmmaker, film historian, and Fulbright fellow. He has taught workshops in recycled cinema in Toronto and Peru, and has published two books on the history of Canadian cinema. His films have received retrospectives at the Anthology Film Archives and the Canadian Film Institute.
