So once more a remake of a cult classic has been remade and for the most part, failed so far at the box office. So why does Hollywood think they can keep making these things and still make money? Because one or two that weren't very good in the first place made a bit more money at the box office than they had been made for. Now don't get me wrong the Texas Chainsaw remake wasn't exactly bad, it didn't completely destroy the original for me, and surprisingly neither did the remake of Dawn of the Dead. But now they've gone to far, there remaking one of my most beloved movies, one of the closest ones to my heart (at least the series anyway). The Evil Dead, some people don't mind this and some are even looking forward to it, but an Evil Dead movie with no Bruce Campbell attached to direct it is a crime against nature. Not to mention that they will take absolutely everything that made the original great, i.e. the campiness, away (even though this was originally a serious attempt I suspect they will combine the first two). And technically the original was remade with Evil Dead II helmed by the great Sam Raimi the way he saw fit. Now not all remakes are bad, hell Scarface is one of the best damn crime stories out there and it's a remake. And I don't think id have a big a problem with the remake of The Evil Dead as much if the amazing Bruce Campbell was gonna reprise his role as Ash, even with out Sam Raimi it couldn't help but be great. But no Bruce Campbell no Evil Dead, in fact I have often joked to friends about making enough money to by up the rights to Evil Dead, and making sure no one remade it without Bruce Campbell, I actually care that much. But as I mentioned before not all remakes are bad, most of the resent ones are just horrible and don't follow the original at all, but one good one I saw recently (which also failed, but probably shouldn't have) was Alfie, the remake of the original 1966 film of the same name staring Michael Cain. This movie staring the it boy right now, Jude Law, was actually a refreshing change from the normal crap "chic flix" made now adays, with more of a somber tone. I don't really want to go into great detail as to what its about, but I will say it is well acted, fairly well directed, good dialogue ad stays fairly true to the original (at least as much as it can be while setting it in modern day). Now this movie should be out soon so I urge everyone to go see it. But for every Alfie we get ten Assault on precinct 13's or Dawn of the dead's. Now I expect ill see the Evil Dead remake on opening day, but that's cause that's the type of guy I am (I had too see Battlefield Earth just to be sure of how bad it is). But I urge Mr. Campbell to please, please step back into the shoes of the Chainsaw handed, big chinned, trash talking, boomstick welding, deadite ass kicking guy that Ash is.

Levi Meaden is a 17 year old movie lover that is going to film school in the fall and plans to hopefully direct one day. Feel free to drop him a line at spidey2031@hotmail.com
