Welcome to the world of tommorow

Quentin Tarantino once said "I hate the Matrix, if I wanted special effects I'd stick my dick in a Nintendo." for the most part I agree with him. I mean not about the Matrix, it actually really made you think once you got down to the true Plato typed philosophical meanings of it. But about special effects, I am sick of hearing how great a movie is just cause the FX are good. I mean especially the computer effects; yes we get the point you can make things digitally now. Once you get passed being blinded by the FX the movies are flat, full of 2d characters and really are nothing special. And in 20 years people will start to realize this, they'll go back and watch some of their "favs" only to realize the FX look crappy and the movie is actually incredibly lack luster. A prime example of this would be Logans Run, a big hit back in 1976 but here we are just 30 years later and I sat down to watch it and not only was it horribly directed and scripted, it looked like it was shot in a paper mill over a weekend. So in a few years when somebody sits down to watch the day after tomorrow or whatever big Hollywood special effects trash is coming out next there in for a huge disappointment. Now special effects aren't so bad if u can look past them and find a story, which happens so rarely that it's the proverbial diamond in the rough. I think we need to take a step back and go back to when we did everything with scale models, and actual makeup. Blade Runner and Alien, both directed by Ridley Scott, both had a good story and both used scale models. And they have held up so incredibly well twenty five years later, I'm amazed. Another one that I think is often overlooked and didn't use a many CGI effects as thought is The Fifth element one of my personal faves, mostly done with models, hat were so detailed it was hard to believe they weren't real. But instead we keep going forward thanks to the Spielbergs and Lucas's of the world, to put out as many of these pieces of crap a year as they can. Now maybe I'll be proven wrong about the special effects and maybe they'll look good forever, but most likely they wont. And if they continue to get better, will there even be a need for actors anymore? Will our great grandchildren sit down to watch one of our movies and say aww look at those people they look so fake? Like ironically some weird sci-fi movie where they over use the special effects? Yea, you're right probably not but still one never knows.

Levi Meaden is a 17 year old movie lover that is going to film school in the fall and plans to hopefully direct one day. Feel free to drop him a line at spidey2031@hotmail.com
