"Joker" centers around the iconic arch-nemesis and is an original, standalone story not seen before on the big screen. The exploration of Arthur Fleck (Joaquin Phoenix), a man disregarded by society, is not only a gritty character study, but also a broader cautionary tale.

Thankfully Todd Phillips divorced 'Joker' from the tiresome DC empire and just made a haunting, unadorned view of what America really is, right in this moment. Joaquim Phoenix's 'Joker' need not even be bi-polar and forced off his meds. He is 'everyman' who eventually just could not take the lies and bullying from emotionless robot dogs anymore. A pal offers him a gun, ostensibly just to see what might happen. The close camera on his innocence and sudden realizations, on his innocent dance are reminiscent of Scorsese's Taxi Driver. Haunting (repeat) and memorable.
