"Wander Darkly" In "Wander Darkly", a traumatic accident leaves a couple, Adrienne (Sienna Miller) and Matteo (Diego Luna), in a surreal state of being that takes them on a disorienting journey through the duality of their shared moments. Reliving fond recollections of the beginning of their romance while also navigating the overwhelming truths of their present, they must rediscover the love that binds them. In the aftermath, Adrienne finds herself in a disorienting state of limbo, unstuck in time and witnessing life from a distance. Forced to confront her troubled relationship with her longtime partner, Matteo (Diego Luna), and the future of their infant daughter Shea (Aimee Carrero), Adrienne must relive and renegotiate the events of the recent past; and solve the mystery of the accident. Stepping into the shadows with Matteo, Adrienne looks for clues about what went wrong between them. By reliving fond recollections from the beginning of their romance while also navigating the overwhelming truths of their present, they must rediscover the love that truly binds their souls together. The film offers a profound new perspective on the delicate nature of relationships with this emotionally moving story about a couple who must reflect on their past in order to face their uncertain future. Adrienne navigates the film’s demanding tonal shifts. Matteo is both elusive and engaged, walking the line between the film’s ethereal and earthly planes. The film is interested in crafting a subjective narrative for Adrienne that mirrored the way our own brain often works, failing to stay present in the present; drifting into the past and projecting into the future. The film follows a purely subjective and often slippery emotional reality in order to create something that feels, at it's core, true and honest. It's important that the aesthetic and design of the film express Adrienne’s heightened experience but equally important that the film still feel grounded, authentic, and rooted in this couples’ specific journey. "Wander Darkly" is about one couple’s journey of love, life and loss; about how we protect ourselves from painful truths and how we make meaning of our fragile lives. The mind is an amazing thing. The story leaves us feeling overwhelmed with a profound sense of gratitude for the delicate, imperfect lives we're living. Gently moving between the enigmatic and the romantic, "Wander Darkly" traverses genre borders, taking us on a journey that's both uncanny and emotionally resonant. The highly affecting existential drama deftly explores how we build narratives of love and loss from the fragmented memories of our lives. This film is a little bit of poetry to remind us what all the politics is for. "Wander Darkly" wants people to walk out of this film and go home and have sex; or hug their children;;or call their parents. The film wants us to look around at these fragile little lives we're so lucky to lead and say thank you. written by Gregory Mann
