After a successful inaugural festival in 2015, the Edmonton Movie Club presents the Second Annual India Film Festival of Alberta (IFFA) during July 15 -17, 2016.

This year we will screen 12 films in 10 different Indian languages. The films are from several regions of India, ranging from the southernmost tip to the northwestern and northeastern borders, and covering the gamut of emotions from childhood innocence, comedy, grief, love, war, terrorism, and corruption. Most of the films are award winners in India, and some have won international awards also. Both commercial and smaller, independent films are included.

While all films are fictionalized, some are based on true events. Though not documentaries, they nevertheless shed light on the social, political, and moral issues confronting Indian society. The way the characters deal with these issues speaks to the universal human experience, even under very different circumstances. In this way, both of EMC's missions to bridge cultures and educate via cinema are fulfilled.

This year there will be a more explicitly educational component to the festival as well. The three invited guests who are experienced in acting, directing, and writing, will conduct a workshop on Introduction to Indian Filmmaking. This workshop is intended for those who may have little or no exposure to Indian films, and are curious to learn the different styles of film making from a very different narrative tradition to that which they may be used to. The workshop will be a good way to network with professionals from the different Indian industries, learn about professional opportunities.
