7:00 pm:  The Epic of Everest
The Epic of Everest is the official film record, shot by Captain John Noel, of the third British expedition to attempt to reach the summit of the world’s highest peak. The film exemplifies the age of heroic adventure as it records the approach to the mountain and the final attempts of climbers George Mallory and Sandy Irvine on the summit ridge before their tragic disappearance. A digital restoration and new score by Simon Fisher Turner have added new life to this wonderful historic document.

9:15 pm:  Badgered
The tale of a badger who just wants the world to let him sleep.

9:15 pm:  Being Caribou
Wildlife biologist Karsten Heuer and emerging filmmaker Leanne Allison set out from the remote village of Old Crow in the Yukon to follow the annual migration of the Porcupine caribou herd. The couple’s plan is to accompany the 123,000 caribou from their wintering range in central Yukon to the spring calving grounds on Alaska’s coastal plain, and back again – on foot! It is a 1500-kilometre journey across three mountain ranges, through blizzards and among aggressive predators. This film is a stunning narrative that reveals the threat posed by proposed American oil and gas drilling to these northern creatures.

8:00 pm:  The Red Helmet
Overcome with fear, a young boy runs into the forest. He finds a magic red helmet and goes on the adventure of a lifetime. Slowly building courage, he is transformed and returns to confront his boyhood fears.

8:00 pm:  Christophe
An often hair-raising perspective of an extreme climber on an incredible solo ascent of the Dru near Chamonix. Viewing the film three decades later reminds us that French climber Christophe Profit was way ahead of his time in the realm of free soloing.

8:00 pm:  Alone Across Australia
In 2001, climber and adventurer Jon Muir began a 2500-kilometre odyssey to cross Australia from the south coast to the north coast on foot. For 128 days, Jon and his dog, Seraphine, survived entirely off the land, hunting and gathering along the way. Jon was taxed to the limit physically and emotionally. Often close to despair, he drew on his instinct for survival, his deep understanding of the land and his remarkable inner strength.

7:00 pm:  Cowboy
A theatrical short on the solitary work of a cowboy who takes a herd of cattle into the Rocky Mountains of southern Alberta each spring for summer grazing. Winner of a Special Jury Award.

7:00 pm:  chasseur du miel
This film explores the lives of the Garoons in the Himalayan Mountains of Nepal. A team of men hunt the high cliffs to collect honey. This livelihood is passed down through the generations.

7:00 pm:  Red Gold
At the headwaters of the Kvichak and Nushagak rivers in Bristol Bay, Alaska – the two largest remaining sockeye salmon runs on the planet — mining companies have proposed to extract what may be the richest deposit of gold and copper in the world. This film documents the growing unrest among native, commercial and sport fishermen who oppose the proposed Pebble Mine, as well as giving mine officials a chance to argue their case. Red Gold is a portrait of a unique way of life that would not exist if the salmon didn’t return with Bristol Bay’s tide.

7:00 pm:  Mount Blanc Speed Flying
Six speed riders fly from the upper slopes of Mont Blanc down to Chamonix in one continuous 10-minute shot, filmed in Cineflex.

7:00 pm:  Asiemut
In 2005, Olivier Higgins and Mélanie Carrier went on their first cycling expedition — 8000 kilometres across Asia. In six months they pedalled from Mongolia to Calcutta, India, travelling through Xinjiang, the Taklimakan Desert, the high Tibetan plateau and the jungle of Nepal. Why? Not only to discover the world, but also to discover themselves.

7:00 pm:  He Dances For His Cormorants
Zong Man is considered the best fisherman on the Lijiang River. He has twelve cormorants, trained to catch the biggest fish in the river. Each year Zong Man raises a young cormorant. Here begins his surprising story: a marriage, an egg and a birth, revealing secrets which have been passed down for generations.

7:00 pm:  Berserk in the Antarctic
This is the incredible story of three young men who risk their lives again and again on board their little yacht, Berserk. Their destination is Antarctica, and the frank portrayal of the three sailors is fresh and humorous. Plenty of people said that this voyage was doomed to go wrong – and they were right.

9:15 pm:  Stranded…I’ve Come From a Plane that Crashed on the Mountains
One of the greatest survival stories of all time is finally told by the survivors themselves, brilliantly crafted by their childhood friend, master filmmaker Gonzalo Arijón. Arijón goes beyond the lurid tale of cannibalism that swept the media to discover the essence of this extraordinary human drama. Exceptional re-enactments set the stage for an experiential journey that unlocks the truth of this amazing story. Thirty-five years later, the survivors and their children revisit the crash site. Stranded is a profound parable of the human condition, as hauntingly powerful as it is true.
