Celebrating independent animation for 11 years!!

The Giant Incandescent Resonating Animation Festival is back for its 11th year, and as always, we're dedicated to bringing you the best in independent animation from around the world. We've gone through nearly 1,000 submissions from over 65 countries, and have put together what we think are the most exciting, boundary-pushing, all-around-magical films for Calgary's audiences to take in.

Celebrate the best in local, national and international independent animation at Quickdraw's Giant Incandescent Resonating Animation Festival, running November 26 - 29 at the Globe Cinema.

From our opening gala, which includes the world premiere of Calgary animator Chad VanGaalen's sci-fi adventure Tarboz, through the Christopher Nolan-compiled Quay Brothers retrospective, our visiting artist spotlight and workshop with Caleb Wood, the experimental animated documentary The Magic Mountain and the dozens of animated shorts, these films represent the absolute best of modern, artful, adult-focussed animation.

All that plus a live musical performance from Street of Crocodiles, a retro video game bash and a music video brunch at our official unofficial afterparty venue, Broken City. We're pretty darn excited. We hope you are, too.

All screenings after 6pm are licenced (thanks to our sponsor Big Rock). Screenings from November 26-28 take place at the Globe Cinema; all events on November 29 are at the Quickdraw Animation Society's downtown studios. We'll see you there!

About GIRAF

An annual animation festival that runs each November at the Globe Cinema in Calgary, GIRAF celebrates the spirit of independent, underground, and experimental animation, showcasing Canadian animators and presenting diverse animations from around the globe. We’ve showcased the award-winning independent work of artists including Don Hertzfeldt, David O’Reilly, The Brothers Quay, Wendy Tilby and Amanda Forbis, Malcolm Sutherland, Koji Yamamura, Bruce Bickford, Brandon Bloomaert, Barry Doupe, Cordell Barker, Richard Reeves, Chad Van Gaalan, Mati Kutt, Jan Svankmajer, Priit Parn, Nick Fox-Gieg, Amy Lockhart, Stu Hughes, Madi Piller, and Cam Christiansen, among many others.

GIRAF is committed to creating greater awareness for animation as an art form, through interactive activities including workshops, artist talks, visiting artists, and animation screenings. We focus on presenting works that push boundaries through the development of new techniques, hybrid forms of creation, and challenging subject matter, and thus animation that is rarely seen at other festivals. GIRAF is run by the Quickdraw Animation Society, a non-profit, artist-run centre in Calgary Alberta.
