Make No Little Plans: Daniel Burnham and the American City (2010 | 56 mins)

Few individuals have had more impact on the American city than architect and planner Daniel Hudson Burnham. In the midst of late 19th century urban disorder, Burnham offered a powerful vision of what a civilized American city could look like that provided a compelling framework for Americans to make sense of the world around them. He built some of the first skyscrapers in the world, directed construction of the 1893 World’s Columbian Exposition that inspired the City Beautiful Movement, and created urban plans for San Francisco, Washington DC, Chicago, Cleveland and Manila all before the profession of urban planning existed. In fact, some say he invented it.

E2: Portland: A Sense of Place (2009 | 26 mins)

Thanks to a progressive public transportation portfolio that includes train, streetcar, bus and aerial tram, Portland has become a global model of TOD. For more than 40 years, city planners have uniquely integrated transport decisions into urban growth and development efforts. The result: Portland is consistently ranked as one of the country’s most livable cities, boasting a healthy two percent population growth annually – and the second lowest per capita transportation spending of the 28 largest U.S. metropolitan areas.

About Baconfest

The brain-child of Planning, Development & Assessment General Manager Rollin Stanley, Baconfest was originally intended as one-time film festival in 2014 to celebrate a short film series created by Ed Bacon. The event was so well received by Calgarians that it became an annual film festival celebrating and exploring urbanism in all its forms.

Who is Edmund Bacon?

Ed Bacon is the only city planner to grace the cover page of time magazine in 1964, and on the cover of Life in 1965. While he may be known as the father of Kevin Bacon, the impact of Edmund's work helped shape the landscape of the City of Philadelphia, where he served as the head of the planning commission for two decades beginning in 1949. In retirement, he undertook an extensive four part series titled "Understanding Cities" beginning in 1981.
